San Luis Rey Downs Golf Resort

If you want a Southern California golf getaway that puts you closer to the action in L.A. and San Diego, we recommend SAN LUIS REY DOWNS GOLF RESORT (800-78-DOWNS, www.slrd.com), located about halfway between the two metropolises in tiny Bonsall, Calif. Surrounded by eucalyptus-covered hills and back country views of the San Luis Rey River Valley, it’s hard to believe that you’re just 15 minutes from the Oceanside beaches, 45 minutes from Sea World in San Diego and an hour from Disneyland. “The best thing about San Luis Rey Downs is that it’s not overpopulated; there are very few homes on the course,” says manager and Director of Golf Greg Milligan. “You can really leave Southern California behind if you want, while still being close enough to other activities.” The 6,750-yard course drops from an elevated first tee down into the heart of the valley, winding around creeks and trees before returning back to the clubhouse. Standing on the 10th tee, more than 50 feet above the fairway below, golfers can enjoy some serious eye candy, with the entire valley at their feet, before threading a drive between dual water hazards that threaten to punish those who are too distracted by the view. Superintendent Mike Gleason should be credited for keeping San Luis Rey Downs’ greens in peak condition, while the natural setting and imaginative layout make a round at the course a fun and memorable challenge. Back at the clubhouse, which sits atop the hillside, golfers can grab a beer and a burger while catching the game on one of the restaurant’s 18 TVs, including a 56-inch hi-def big screen. The Lodge At San Luis Rey Downs, meanwhile, is a popular getaway for in-the-know SoCal residents, featuring private balconies and patios, a heated pool and Jacuzzi, and dramatic views of the valley and golf course from nearly every room. As with the major Palm Springs resorts, San Luis Rey Downs, too, is going to great lengths to make a visit worth your while. Currently, single rounds are as low as $44 ($64 with cart) or $22/$30 after 3 p.m. each day. The deal is even better for those looking to make San Luis Rey Downs their home base, with two-night, three-round, stay-and-play packages available for as low as $165 — or, roughly the cost of one night alone at one of the swankier Palm Springs, L.A. or San Diego hotels. Milligan says that the club will also do custom packages for any length of stay; just give them a call. Here’s recommending you do.
