Kang’s The Thang

Jimin KangYou remember Jimin Kang (pronounced Jih-men Kang) — the Edmonds teen with the winning smile and killer short game who tore the Northwest amateur circuit apart in the late ‘90s, winning numerous PNGA honors and placing second at the 1999 U.S. Women’s Amateur, before embarking on an outstanding collegiate career at Arizona State. Hard as it may be to believe, Kang is now entering her sixth full professional season, and shows no sign of letting up anytime soon. Long known for her ability to put it all together on any given week and make a run at the top of the leaderboard, Kang in 2007 put together one of her most consistent seasons, making the cut at each of the year’s four major tournaments and tying for 16th at the U.S. Women’s Open. The 27-year-old Kang has been a mainstay on Tour since winning Futures Tour Player of the Year honors in 2004, and capturing her first professional victory at the LPGA Corning Classic in 2005. Since then, she has earned five top-10 finishes and more than $700,000 in career earnings, shooting her all the way to 197th on the LPGA’s career money-winners list. Northwest fans wanting to catch Kang in action will have to wait until August, when the LPGA Tour comes to Portland, Ore., for the $1.7 million Safeway Classic, presented by Pepsi.
