PinHighCaddie Puts Class On The Grass

OK, so we’re all excited to play Chambers Bay. The beautiful views, championship-caliber holes — it’s too good to be true, right? Well, in one small way, yes … it’s a no-cart course. It’s a small price to pay for playing such a beautiful course, but still, lugging the bag up and down those dunes for five hours isn’t going to do wonders for your back and shoulders — and trust me, you’ll be needing those muscles as you come down the home stretch.
But maybe there’s a solution.
Stephen Janho certainly thinks so — Janho, of Puyallup, is the founder of PinHighCaddie, an online, professional golf caddie service that provides caddies to golfers at courses throughout the Puget Sound region.
“Most of our business comes from contracts with courses and clubs, or corporate and charity events that want to add a touch of class to their tournament,“ Janho says, “but our caddies work on an individual basis as well. Just let us know when and where you need us, and we’ll be there.“
It really is that easy — pick up the phone or go online, give PinHighCaddie your tee time and course location, and a caddy will meet you at the course. Caddies carry bags, track balls, rake bunkers, clean clubs, provide yardages and assist on reading greens and shot alignment. All of PinHigh’s caddies are professionally trained, having passed both a classroom orientation and on-course training.
A part-time caddy himself, Janho says he was dismayed at how many courses treat caddies as day laborers, offering little compensation outside of tips.
“It really is a shame … the clubs need caddies, but since no one had ever thought to organize them, there’s no incentive for the clubs to offer any kind of competitive wages or benefits,“ he says. “Through PinHigh, I’ve tried to provide stable work, better pay and a more respectful work environment for caddies, while also having a training and oversight system that ensures the most professional and top-quality caddy experience for the golfer.“
Janho is currently contracted to provide caddies for The Members Club at Aldarra and Meridian Valley Country Club, as well as Valencia Country Club in California, and is hopeful to add more contracts in the near future. In the meantime, PinHigh continues to grow the business through word of mouth from satisfied golfers, a significant percentage of whom become repeat customers.
“It’s the limo ride to the airport, or the nice bottle of wine at dinner — you’re not going to do it every time,“ Janho says. “But for a special occasion, or just if you’re looking for something unique or different, it’s a lot of fun, and easy to do.“
