TaylorMade r7 Limited & Burner Drivers

There’s little question that when the pros hit the PGA Show in Orlando, they’re going to head for the TaylorMade hitting cages. That’s because everyone is clamoring to get their hands on the latest releases in the company’s vaunted r7 and Burner line of drivers. Back in 2004, TaylorMade pioneered the idea of Moveable Weight Technology (MWT) in the r7 Quad, allowing golfers to adjust weights in the clubhead to customize for swing speed and draw/fade bias. While the idea behind MWT was (and is) a breakthrough for golfers worldwide, some golfers found the process overwhelming — to the point that some who had bought the club ended up forgoing the feature altogether. With the r7 Limited, TaylorMade has significantly simplified the process, reducing the total number of moveable weights to just three — one 16-ounce weight and two one-ounce weights — located along the top, rear and bottom of the sole. Moving the 16-ounce weight into any one of the three positions allows the golfer to add a natural draw or fade to their drives — a valuable asset for those of us who aren’t quite swing savvy enough to do so naturally. What’s most remarkable, though, is that in simplifying the club, TaylorMade has increased its effectiveness. While the original r7 Quad boasted just 20 yards of variable trajectory, the new r7 Limited boasts 35 yards of bias, the most of any driver in the r7 family. In addition, TaylorMade designers have crafted a significant new release to its Burner line of drivers, the choice of many of TaylorMade’s top pros. Think of the Burner ’09 as the cross between the Burner and Tour Burner drivers, a club combining the SuperFast technology developed for the ’07 Burner and the Tour Burner’s patented Dual Crown Technology. The resulting combination is a driver that generates both high-launch and low-to-mid spin — the essential ingredients of a long drive — while remaining generous to mistakes and workable from side to side. Indeed, from Hale Irwin and Darren Clarke to American Ryder Cup hero Kenny Perry, pros are already scrambling to add the Burner to their arsenal. After January’s PGA Merchandise Show, they won’t be the only ones.
