Just released in November of 2007, the Nike SQ SUMO Hybrid has caused quite a stir among the golf community — not because of the technology Nike has committed towards making it the top hybrid on the market, but simply because of its shape. While high-MOI drivers have become all the rage over the past two years, prior to Nike’s release of the SQ SUMO, manufacturers had yet to apply the technology to a traditional hybrid. By decreasing the offset, Nike has generated a high MOI while also leaving the more skilled golfer the ability to put a little fade or draw on the ball as necessary. Now, if you prefer a club that tells you right away if you’ve mishit the ball, this probably isn’t the one for you — the SUMO’s lightweight cryo steel face is thicker in the middle than at the edges, resulting in a consistent feel — and a more consistent and longer shot — no matter where on the face the ball is struck. But most high-handicappers will swap feel for consistency and distance, and in those areas, the SUMO can’t be beat. It might have the golf world up in arms, but it sure does look cool sticking out of a bag.
